We believe innovation must serve artists, and that technology should operate within the same rights framework as music itself. The future of AI in music depends on our core pillars of Consent, Control, Compensation, and Transparency.
Our responsibility is to protect the long-term value of creative work. As generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into music creation, it presents new opportunities for innovation - but only when supported by clear safeguards. Without those safeguards, it risks compromising artists’ rights and sustainable creative careers.
We support the use of GenAI in music when artists’ rights are respected, training data is properly licensed, and creators retain transparency and control over their work. For this reason, TuneCore only distributes music created using GenAI models trained on fully licensed datasets. Music created using models that rely on unlicensed datasets is not eligible for distribution through TuneCore.
This approach reflects our responsibility as an artist development company to protect creative ownership while supporting responsible innovation.
To help artists navigate this evolving space with confidence, we've partnered with Google Flow Music to offer artists a clear path to create GenAI music that's ready for TuneCore distribution.
When evaluating a GenAI tool in their music content creation process, artists should look for:
· Clear information about how the tool is trained
· Explicit statements about the use of licensed or rights-cleared music datasets
· Transparent terms of service outlining ownership and usage rights.
If a tool doesn’t clearly explain where its training data comes from or how it's licensed, we recommend proceeding with caution.
Does TuneCore support the use of GenAI in music creation, and what’s eligible for distribution?
Yes. TuneCore supports creative innovation, including the responsible use of AI as part of the music creation process, aligned with our AI principles of consent, control, compensation, and transparency.
Music created using GenAI models that rely on fully licensed datasets is eligible for distribution through TuneCore. Music generated using GenAI models that rely on unlicensed datasets is not eligible for distribution.
We've partnered with Google Flow Music, an AI-powered platform where you can create, refine, develop, and release new music that is ready for TuneCore distribution. TuneCore Artists also receive bonus credits - just visit your dashboard and click the Flow Music banner. Learn more here!
How do I know if a GenAI tool relies on licensed datasets?
We recommend reviewing the GenAI tool’s documentation, terms of service, or licensing disclosures to understand how it sources or trains on music.
If a tool does not clearly explain where its source material or datasets come from, it may not meet distribution requirements.
Does this apply if I only use GenAI as part of the creative process?
Yes. If GenAI is used at any point in the creation of a track, the tools involved must rely on fully licensed datasets for the music to be eligible for distribution.
Will TuneCore provide a list of approved AI tools?
We're actively building a network of partners who meet our distribution requirements - and we're excited to make them available for you.
Flow Music is an approved partner and ready for TuneCore distribution. We will continue to add more partners over time.
Why is TuneCore taking this approach on GenAI?
Our approach is grounded in our core principles of Consent, Control, Compensation, and Transparency - which guide how we support innovation while protecting artists’ rights.
As GenAI becomes more common in music creation, it’s increasingly important that these tools operate within the same creative rights framework as music itself.
Some GenAI models are trained on fully licensed datasets, while others rely on unlicensed copyrighted works. This distinction matters because tools trained on unlicensed data don’t provide artists with consent, control, or compensation and don’t support sustainable creative careers.
Bottom line: TuneCore supports artists using new creative tools, including GenAI, when those tools respect creative ownership and align with our core principles. That's how innovation becomes sustainable, and how we continue building long-term value for artists. Our partnership with Google Flow Music is a direct reflection of that commitment, and we’ll continue to add new partners in the future.
