Paid Streams:
For songs streamed, Spotify has deals with necessary rights holders in all of its launch countries. Spotify and these rights holders have agreed upon a royalty based on how frequently your music is played. Each stream earns you a share of Spotify's advertising revenue. The actual amount varies and depends on the ratio of advertising revenue and your percentage of the total number of streams on Spotify in a given month.
When a subscriber streams your music, you get paid a proportionate share of Spotify's subscription revenue per month calculated on terms set out in TuneCore's blanket agreement with the store (this usually excludes streams during a subscriber's free trial). Payments will fluctuate each month, depending on the amount of subscription revenue generated and how often your music was streamed.
Some countries have special rules, so that even before taxes, tariffs, exchange rates or treaties kick in, some money is deducted by the store to pay fees and royalties dictated by local copyright laws. So from the amount you receive for sales of your music in that country, some amount will be deducted to pay the copyright holders under the local copyright laws. Even if the copyright holder is you, some laws require certain royalties to be paid out in that country. However, no matter what, you will be paid the pay rate, after taxes, exchange rate adjustments, etc.
Also, if your content is played in Spotify Radio funds will be paid to your TuneCore account.
GOOD TO KNOW: We've built our TuneCore Publishing Administration to get songwriters (the person or entity that controls the copyright to the lyrics and melody of the song) all of their royalties from the sales and use of their songs around the world. To learn more about the additional separate royalties you earn as a Songwriter, see our Publishing Administration Help section.
NOTE: Spotify displays any releases that have 5 songs or less and are under 30 minutes in total length, in the "Singles" section of their store.
