The following information is regarding TuneCore's Publishing Administration service ONLY
Please go here for information about splitting distribution revenue with TuneCore Splits
Your share also known as a “split” refers to how much of the copyright you own for a particular composition. For example, if you wrote a composition in its entirety then you own 100%. This means your share is 100%.
If you work with a co-writer or producer or even a team of other co-writers and producers, that’s when we start to split up the ownership percentage into shares. This an individual negotiation between you and the different individuals you work with.
A simple example would be a 50/50 split between the individual who wrote the lyrics and the individual who wrote the music. Some bands may split ownership equally i.e. if there are 4 members, then each member gets 25%. A producer may ask 10-50% of your publishing of a song in lieu of a producer fee. It really depends on what is agreed upon. We strongly advise that splits be agreed with any of your collaborators in writing.
Sometimes splits change, if that happens the TuneCore Artist Support team can help! When you're contacting us about a split change, be sure to provide the following information:
- The email address associated with your TuneCore account
- The composition you need to change
- The new share of splits
