TuneCore is limited to using the genres that all stores have in common, so we created our list of the most common genres. Unfortunately, this list does not include all available genres, but it offers a sizable amount drawn from the available genres that our digital stores use.
When creating your release, you can select two different genres: a primary genre and a secondary genre.
Store formatting in relation to genres
Once you send your release to stores, please note that iTunes & Amazon may change the following genres on your release to fit their store’s editorial discretion:
iTunes:
- "Folk" to "Singer/Songwriter"
- "Inspirational" to "Christian/Gospel"
Amazon:
- "Spoken Word" to "Miscellaneous/Poetry, Spoken Word & Interviews"
- "Singer/Songwriter" to "Rock/Singer/Songwriter"
- "Vocal" to "Opera/Vocal"
- "Electronic" to "Dance & Electronic"
In addition, TuneCore is unable to deliver albums under the "Classical" genre to iTunes, as we currently do not have the interface to add the extra information that is required for classical albums (such as composers, movements, tempo, etc.)
You can distribute to all other stores EXCEPT iTunes and select the "Instrumental" genre."
Please do not submit classical albums to the iTunes store as they will be blocked during our front-end review process.*
